Belonging to the Church
Discover why worship, baptism, communion, fellowship and service belong together in a growing Christian life.
You belong to a people
Following Jesus is personal, but it is not meant to be solitary. God brings believers into a family. The church is more than a building, an event or a collection of online resources: it is a community of people learning to worship, love and serve under Christ’s leadership.
Acts 2:41–47 describes believers learning from the apostles, sharing life, breaking bread and praying. These patterns help us understand what belonging looks like. We receive encouragement and care, and we also become people through whom others receive them.
Gather to worship and learn
Regular worship helps us turn our attention towards God. We sing, hear Scripture, pray and receive teaching alongside people whose experiences may be different from our own. Gathering reminds us that our faith is part of something larger than our individual preferences.
Consistency matters, but attendance is a beginning rather than the whole of belonging. Learn people’s names. Stay for a conversation. Ask questions about what you hear. Let someone know when you need help, and notice when another person might need encouragement.
Read Hebrews 10:23–25. Consider how gathering can help us hold firmly to hope and encourage one another towards love and good works.
Understand baptism and communion
Jesus instructs His followers to make disciples and baptise them. Baptism is a public expression of belonging to Christ. Praise Tabernacle practises baptism by immersion in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. If you have begun following Jesus and would like to be baptised, speak with the church team about preparation.
Read: Matthew 28:18–20 and Romans 6:1–4.
In communion, Christians remember Jesus’ death and proclaim their hope in Him. The bread and cup direct our attention to His sacrifice. We approach thoughtfully, examining ourselves and remembering that we share in a life received through His grace.
Read: 1 Corinthians 11:23–29. Ask a church leader if you would like help understanding or preparing to take part.
Receive care and offer it
Christian community includes prayer, encouragement, correction and practical support. You do not need to present yourself as someone who never struggles. Healthy growth includes learning to ask for help and to receive it with humility.
At the same time, belonging gives us opportunities to care for others. A phone call, a meal, a welcome at the door or a faithful prayer can become a meaningful act of love. Ask whom God has placed near you, and what you can do with the time and abilities you have.
Find a place to serve
Service grows out of love for Christ and His people. It is not a competition for visibility or a way to prove your worth. Start by being willing, reliable and open to learning.
Explore a ministry that fits your gifts and circumstances, and speak with the relevant team about what involvement requires. Leave room for rest, family responsibilities and continued learning. Faithfulness is more important than trying to do everything.
Take one step this week
- Plan your visit or check the service times.
- Introduce yourself to the welcome team and ask about your next step.
- Tell someone if you would like to discuss baptism or Christian discipleship.
- Explore a ministry and ask how you could begin serving.
Reflect: Who knows how I am doing in my faith? Whose growth and wellbeing am I helping to support?
Ask God to help you receive and give the care that makes church a family. Growing together is part of growing in Christ.
